ANEMONE HUPEHENSIS VAR. JAPONICA, 2014 archival pigment print, 42 x 42"

The Beauty of Life

A solo exhibition of new work by Elaine Waisglass

April 5 - 25, 2014
Opening reception: April 5, 10 am - 5 pm

Known for her large, painterly photographs of the flowers she grows in a garden she designed.  The imagery hovers between the real and the super-real, with each picture perceivable as either or both a painting and a photograph.  In this latest work, Waisglass turns to still life images of flowers set in vases, portrayed with richly intense colors that conjure up and celebrate the joyful vitality of the blossoms opening according to their season, from early frost to fall.

Titled by their botanical name, the wide variety of flowers in this series includes the spring-blooming Heliborus (common name Helibore), that can be found peeking out through melting snow, the summer-blooming Opium Poppy (Papaver_somniferum), a wild flower that plants itself in the garden wherever it pleases, and the Anemone hupehensis var. japonica (Japanese anemone), among the last flowers of summer.
